Gibson Sotheby's International Realty®

Betty Gibson

Gibson Sotheby's International Realty®: A Brief History

In 1962, Betty Gibson, a woman with a pioneering spirit and great vision, founded our company in Boston's South End. With its bow front Victorian row houses on picturesque, if neglected, side streets, Betty knew the South End was a neighborhood destined for rebirth. And that's exactly what happened over the next three decades. With Betty Gibson Associates (as we were called then) leading the way, the South End was transformed into the avant garde center of Boston that it is today. Loosely defined as the area bounded by the Southwest Corridor Park, Massachusetts Avenue, Albany Street and Bay Village, it is the most ethnically and economically diverse area in the city of Boston. With beautifully restored townhouses and condominiums, excellent restaurants, lovely parks, unique shops and many art galleries, the South End has surpassed the expectations of even the most visionary people like Betty Gibson. Boston is our home and we take great pride in it.

The Company Today
Since the founding of the Sotheby's auction house in 1744, the Sotheby's name has earned renown as a marketer for many of the world's most valuable and prestigious possessions. The Sotheby's International Realty® organization began in 1976, in part to serve clients desiring a complete package of estate disposition services, and soon became known for representing extraordinary luxury real estate throughout the world.

Now, as Gibson Sotheby's International Realty®, we have over 160 agents, with offices in and around the city: 69 Newbury Street and 227 Newbury Street in the heart of Back Bay, 220 Commercial Street on the Waterfront, 366 West Broadway in South Boston, 119 Savin Hill Avenue in Dorchester, 378 Washington Street in Westwood, South End Rentals at 548 Tremont Street and at 556 Tremont Street you'll find our flagship Sales office.

We exceeded last year’s sales volume by the end of August and raised our total sales by more than 36% over last year. Since January, our firm’s ranking has been boosted from number 16 to number 10 in the state (source: MLS). Our Rental Division, the largest in the city, is up 33% over last year. Our company is growing to meet the needs of our clientele and to continue artfully uniting extraordinary properties with extraordinary lives.
